Commit #312097
SS_PB 1.1 Describe the physiological principles relevant to optimising blood flow to tissue flaps, including:
∙ Determinants and regulation of blood flow through the various components of the vasculature
∙ Determinants and regulation of blood flow through the various components of the vasculature

Commit #312097Regional blood flow is regulated by mechanical, metabolic, and neurohumoral factors:
-
Mechanical (Myogenic Reflex) – Increased arteriolar stretch triggers vasoconstriction to maintain constant organ perfusion.
-
Metabolic Regulation – Low O₂, high CO₂, lactate, and low pH cause vasodilation, increasing blood flow to ischemic tissues.
-
Neurohumoral Factors – SNS stimulation & circulating catecholamines:
-
Vasoconstriction via α-adrenoceptors, increasing SVR & venous return.
-
Enhances preload & CO during stress, pain, trauma, bleeding, etc.
