SS_PB 1.1 Describe the physiological principles relevant to optimising blood flow to tissue flaps, including:
- Oxygen transport and delivery.
Oxygen Transport in Blood
  • Oxygen is carried in the blood as a dissolved fraction and bound to hemoglobin (97%).
  • Oxygen transport is determined by the oxygen flux equation:
    • DO₂ = CO × [Hb] × SpO₂ × Hüfner’s constant (1.39) + 0.023 × PaO₂
Oxygen Dissociation Curve
  • The binding of O₂ to hemoglobin is a cooperative process, making the curve sigmoidal.
  • Several factors influence Hb-O₂ binding:
    • Right shift (favoring O₂ unloading in metabolically active tissues):
      • pH (Bohr effect)
      • Temperature
      • 2,3-DPG
      • CO₂
    • Left shift (favoring O₂ binding):
      • pH
      • CO₂
      • Temperature
      • 2,3-DPG
