SS_OB 1.32 Discuss measures to minimise the risk of injury from positioning the pregnant patient during anaesthesia
  • Aortocaval compression
    • Resulting in severe hypotension as a result of compression of the IVC and aorta against vertebral bodies, decreasing venous return to the heart and lowering CO and impairing uteroplacental perfusion
    • Left lateral tilt or wedge under patient’s right hip required to minimize this risk
  • Peripheral nerve injuries
    • Careful positioning and padding
  • Ocular injuries
    • Application of eye tape
  • Pressure sores
    • Reduction in perfusion can result in tissue ischaemia, tissue breakdown and development of a pressure sore
    • Dissipation of pressure, careful positioning, regular assessment and early post-op mobilization
