Commit #296235
SS_OB 1.32 Discuss measures to minimise the risk of injury from positioning the pregnant patient during anaesthesia
Back
Commit #296235- Aortocaval compression
- Resulting in severe hypotension as a result of compression of the IVC and aorta against vertebral bodies, decreasing venous return to the heart and lowering CO and impairing uteroplacental perfusion
- Left lateral tilt or wedge under patient’s right hip required to minimize this risk
- Peripheral nerve injuries
- Careful positioning and padding
- Ocular injuries
- Application of eye tape
- Pressure sores
- Reduction in perfusion can result in tissue ischaemia, tissue breakdown and development of a pressure sore
- Dissipation of pressure, careful positioning, regular assessment and early post-op mobilization
