SS_TS 1.22 Discuss the diagnosis and management of: 
- Flail Chest 
  • 3 or more ribs fractured in 2 or more areas
  • Paradoxical chest movement + hypoxia and hypercarbia
  • Associated with pulmonary (+/- cardiac) contusions - exacerbates hypoxia
  • Treat: High flow O2, analgesia, chest physio, surgical fixation occasionally performed especially if bilateral segments
  • Analgesia: Paravertebral, epidural
  • Consider non-invasive ventilation if respiratory failure
  • HDU/ICU care ideally
