- Segmental innervation from spinal nerves
- Emerge through intervertebral foramina, then make dorsal and ventral ramus
- Dorsal (posterior) rami supply muscles and skin on back
- Anterior rami → intercostal nerves
- Course near internal intercostal muscles
- Innervation of anterolateral thoracic wall → intercostal nerves 2-6 (lateral cutaneous branches arising in mid axillary line)
- Phrenic nerve → diaphragmatic parietal pleura, mediastinal pleura
Posterolateral thoracotomy → usually single dermatome
Anterolateral → crosses multiple dermatomes
