What are some risk factors/ causes of childhood obesity?
  1. Primary endocrine, neurological, and hypothalamic conditions: rare, < 1% of all cases
  2. Medications and procedures, e.g.: glucocorticoids, TCAs, antipsychotics (risperidone, olanzapine), antiseizure
  3. Genetics, e.g.: Prader-Willi syndrome, Bardet-Biedl syndrome
  4. Ethnicity
  5. Perinatal factors, e.g.: maternal smoking during pregnancy, maternal prepregnancy obesity, high infant birth weight
  6. Diet, e.g.: formula-fed, and formula + breast-fed, prolonged bottle use at 24 months, consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages, sweet snacks, skipping breakfast, fast food, eating out of home, large portion size, food desert/ lack of access to healthy food
  7. Physical activity and screen time: > 4 hrs/ day associated with severe obesity
  8. Sleep duration and quality
  9. Parental and family, e.g.: 2-3x risk if 1 parents with obesity, up to 15x risk if 2 parents with obesity; stress and depression in home (esp maternal); maternal diet, physical activity, smoking, EtOH use; indulgent or restrictive eating; authoritarian or indulgent parenting styles; emotional, physical, and sexual abuse; use of food for reward or punishment
