Field Change Suggestions:
What would I substitute for breast milk once the child is weaned?
Weaning off breastmilk has several etiologies:
  • Gradual weaning: breastfeed on demand, usually complete around 2-4 yo
  • Planned weaning: mother decides to stop without infant cues. Can be done due to supply concerns, baby's growth concerns, painful feedings, return to work, new pregnancy, teething
  • Refusal: multiple causes including onset of menses, change in mother's diet/ soap/ doedorant, teething, infant illness. This should be evaluated
Continue breastfeeding until at least 9-12 mos. Then, introduce whole cow's milk (3.25%). But, ensure no more than 500 - 720 mL of milk/ day. Introduce a variety of solid foods to provide a range of nutrients.
