What is the ASA (American Society of Anesthesiologists) classification for surgical patients? Describe the different categories
  1. ASA I - Normal healthy patient. E.g. healthy, non-smoking
  2. ASA II - Patient with mild systemic disease. E.g. current smoking, pregnancy, obesity with 30 < BMI < 40.
  3. ASA III - Patient with severe systemic disease. E.g. Poorly controlled DM or HTN.
  4. ASA IV - A patient with severe systemic disease that is a constant threat to life. E.g. recent (< 3 mos) MI, CVA, TIA.
  5. ASA V - A moribund patient who is not expected to survive without the operation. E.g. ruptured AAA, massive trauma.
  6. ASA VI - A declared brain-dead patient whose organs are being removed for donor purposes.
