How do you perform a systematic trauma assessment?
ABCDE
A = airway (i.e. air can pass to lungs)
  • Airway patent and intact
  • No blood or obstruction in oropharynx
B = breathing (i.e. oxygenate and ventilate)
  • Equal breath sounds bilaterally, no asymmetrical chest rise, no crepitus or emphysema, trachea midline
  • Satting at X% on Y
C = circulation
  • pulse rate, BP
  • capillary refill
  • peripheral pulses
  • no obvious bleeding to chest, abdo, retroperitoneum, long bones, or externally
  • pelvis stable
D = disability
  • GCS
  • pupillary size and responsiveness
  • gross motor and sensory function all 4 limbs
  • priapism, anal sphincter tone, bulbocavernosus reflex
E = exposure
  • completely expose
  • log-roll
  • check back of head, back, buttocks, perineum, axillae, skin folds
