A young woman is noted to be hyperventilating due to anxiety. Her ABG shows a pH of 7.47, PCO2 of 28 mmHg, and HCO3 of 21 mmol/L. What acid-base disturbance is she experiencing?
Respiratory alkalosis. Due to the hyperventilation, she is blowing off normal CO2 --> causing a deficit of bicarb.
  1. pH is high (7.3-7.4)
  2. pCO2 is low (35-50)
  3. HCO3 is borderline low (20-27)
