Commit #106002
What is a mnemonic for causes of anion gap metabolic acidosis?
Back
Commit #106002
If the gap is enlarge, then there is some other unmeasured anion in the blood caused by excessive organic acid production (products are H+ and unmeasured anion).
Common causes of this are:
Common causes of this are:
- Metabolic acid generation (e.g. lactic acidosis, ketoacidosis)
- Ingestions (e.g. ASA, ethylene glycol, methanol)
- Accumulations (e.g. reduced GFR)
MUDPILES
- Methanol ingestion (formic acid)
- Metformin (L-lactic acid)
- Uremia (retention of SO4 and PO4)
- Diabetic ketoacidosis (beta-hydroxybutyrate ketones +/- lactate)
- Paraldehyde ingestion (acetic acid)
- Isoniazid (ketones)
- Isopropyl alcohol ingestion (formate and acetate via acetone)
- Lactate (L-lactate, D-lactate)
- Ethylene glycol ingestion (glycolic, glyceric, and oxalic acid)
- Salicylates (L-lactate and pyruvate)
