How does the cardiovascular system change during pregnancy, and how might these changes impact a woman with a pre-existing cardiac condition?
Increased O2 demands --> 30-40% increase in RBC volume

Increase in progesterone --> increase NO + vascular remodelling --> decrease peripheral vascular resistance --> BP decreased AND decreased reactivity to vasopressors

40-50% increase in whole blood and plasma volume --> increase in SV and HR --> increase in CO --> placental A-V shunt --> increased venous pressure and statis in lower extremity
