How does pregnancy affect the insulin requirements in women with pre-existing diabetes?
Human chorionic somatomammotropin (hCS/ hPL) is made by syncytiotrophoblast cells and secreted, affecting mom. It promotes insulin resistance + increases maternal plasma glucose concentrations. In those with pre-existing DM, it can cause blood sugars to be higher than normal because the pancreas isn't healthy enough to secrete more insulin.
