What is the pathophysiology of RBC isoimmunization during pregnancy?
Fetal RBCs can cross into maternal circulation during fetal-maternal hemorrhage. If mother's blood type is Rh neg --> isoimmunizing event where B cells begin to produce anti-D. IgG antibodies will be able to traverse the placenta and can act against fetal RBCs. Complications with current pregnancy (rare) or future include hemolytic disease of the neonate and fetal hydrops.
