  • developmental delays, learning disabilities
  • ethnicity
  • genetic disorders
  • consanguinity (first cousin or closer)
  • children dying at young age
  • sudden unexplained deaths
  • infertility, multiple miscarriages
Ethnicity-based screening
  • African, mediterranean, middle eastern, asian, SE asian, hispanic/ south/ central american --> CBC and/or Hb electrophoresis for hemoglobinopathy
  • Caucasian + FHx --> cystic fibrosis
  • French Canadian + FHx --> Tay-Sachs
  • Ashkenazi Jewish --> hematopoietic stem cell screening
Ethnicity-based prevention
  • FHx of neural tube defect or high risk ethnic group (Sikh, celtic, northern chinese) --> folic acid 5 mg daily for at least 3 weeks prior to conception and 12 weeks after conception
