Identify
- congential malformations, birth defects
- developmental delays, learning disabilities
- ethnicity
- genetic disorders
- consanguinity (first cousin or closer)
- children dying at young age
- sudden unexplained deaths
- infertility, multiple miscarriages
- African, mediterranean, middle eastern, asian, SE asian, hispanic/ south/ central american --> CBC and/or Hb electrophoresis for hemoglobinopathy
- Caucasian + FHx --> cystic fibrosis
- French Canadian + FHx --> Tay-Sachs
- Ashkenazi Jewish --> hematopoietic stem cell screening
Ethnicity-based prevention
- FHx of neural tube defect or high risk ethnic group (Sikh, celtic, northern chinese) --> folic acid 5 mg daily for at least 3 weeks prior to conception and 12 weeks after conception
