Bacteriophages Infect a host cell
- To commence an infection cycle, bacteriophages need to {{c1::contact and attach to the surface of an appropriate host cell}}
- Contact and attachment are mediated by {{c1::cell-surface receptors}}, proteins on the host cell surface that are specific to the host and that bind to a specific {{c1::viral component}}
- Cell-Surface receptors are proteins with important function for the host cell that have been {{c1::co-opted by the virus}}
- Host bacteria can evolve resistance to phage attachment by mutating the {{c1::amino acid sequences of its surface receptores}}
