Describe the features of a febrile seizure
Usually associated with rapid rise in body temp secondary to viral or bacterial infection, most common in children aged 6 mos - 5 yrs and peak incidence at 18 months, often FHx, and typically occuring in children without neuro problems or developmental delays.

Simple febrile seizure
  • Duration < 15 min
  • Frequency once in 24 hr period
  • Generalized tonic-clonic
  • Quick recovery
Complex febrile seizure
  • Duration > 15 min
  • Frequency may be > once in 24 hr period
  • Can be focal or generalized
  • Recovery may be longer and there may be temporary weakness or paralysis in affected part, e.g. Todd's paralysis
