At what age is an atrial septal defect (ASD) typically first noticed and why?
Usually during childhood, 3-6 yo, although can be detected earlier or later with a large range.

Typically produce a systolic murmur and fixed splitting of S2. Initially asymptomatic, but as children become more active --> sx of fatigue, SOBOE, and exercise intolerence become more apparent. Can be found incidentally or during investigations for developmental delay.
