Commit #100744
Differentiate between osmotic and secretory diarrhea
Back
Commit #100744
Osmotic diarrhea happens because the solutes present in the intestinal lumen draw water into that space. E.g. lactose intolerance, mannitol consumption. Fasting will improve this.
Secretory diarrhea happens when electrolytes and water are actively secreted from surrounding tissues into the intestinal lumen. E.g. bacterial toxins (Vibrio cholerae, enterotoxigenic E. coli).
