Neonatal
  • Preterm
  • Low birth weight
  • GI tract pathology
  • Neutropenia
  • Decreased baseline serum IgG conc (dysgammaglobinemia)
  • Delay in time needed to regain birth weight
Care-related factors
  • Vascular catheterization
  • Mechanical ventilation (CPAP or endotracheal)
  • Lack of enteral feeding/ hyperalimentation
  • Medications, e.g. H2 antagonists, PPIs, steroids, cephaosporins
  • Prolonged hospital stay (i.e. exposure to environmental pathogens)
