How does a DHCP relay work?
A DHCP relay, or IP helper, is configured into a router. It receives a DHCP Discover broadcast and changes the source address to its own IP, and the destination to the DHCP server on another subnet. This sends the DHCP Discover directly to the DHCP server (not broadcasted). The DHCP server then sends its DHCP Offer directly to the router, which then broadcasts the Offer on its own subnet. The same repeats for the Request and Acknowledgement steps.
