Of the 128 bits in an IPv6 address, the last 64 are dedicated to assigning host addresses and is known as the host ID. The first 64 bits are known as the network portion, or the prefix, of the address. What is the format of the network half of the address?
The first three groups, a total of 48 bits, are called the Global Routing Prefix and are assigned by the IANA/RIR/ISP. The other 16 bits are a locally assigned subnet group that is used for subnetting.
