How does one measure the polarization? What is the issue with measuring the polarization of photons and what is the effect on the quibit function of the measured photon?

One can measure photon polarization by using a polarizing beam splitter. Here the polarization in an arbitrary Basis (Horizontal/vertical, Diagonal/Antidiagonal, lefthanded/righthanded circular) is measured.
The issue is that for superpositions of the orthogonal basis, no difference in the measurement is observed, for Diagonal Light or circular light the light splits up half and half for a Horizontal/vertical Beamsplitter. The measurement reduces the state of the incoming light down to 1 bit of information. Thus the qubit nature of the light is lost.
