Field Change Suggestions:
A 55 year old man is day 5 post anterior resection for an early stage sigmoid cancer. His bowels have still not opened, and this morning you noted that he has increasing abdominal pain, fever and marked rise in inflammatory markers, on examination her looks unwell and is peritonitic. You're suspicious for an anastomotic leak and a CT with rectal contrast confirms that there is a large leak with free gas. You explain to him that he will need to return to theatre for a Hartmann operation. He becomes very upset and angry and says that no one told him this could happen and that his friend had a bowel cancer removed at a 'better hospital' and went home a couple of days later without issue.
How would you deal with this situation?
