Commit #18665You are a general surgery registrar doing a rotation in breast
surgery. You’re in clinic with a 50 year old woman who has a newly diagnosed
breast cancer that is clinically small and without nodal or distant metastases
on imaging. You think that this cancer is potentially curable with surgery.
When you’re discussing this with her, she says that she doesn’t believe in Western medicine and that she has read that there are very effective natural
therapies for her disease and that she would prefer to try this approach than
have surgery or chemotherapy.
How do you handle this?
What would you do if she
absolutely refused the recommended treatments no matter what you say?
