Commit #18626You
are the evening ward registrar and you have been called to see a 49 year old
man who is day 5 post anterior resection with primary anastomosis. He has been
recovering well post-op. His bowels have opened this morning, he’s tolerating
oral intake and his observations are stable. The intern calls you because they
are worried about the wound. When you go to see him, you note that what was
previously a small dehiscence at the inferior edge of his laparotomy wound has now opened up and 500mls of fluid has
poured out.
What
is your differential diagnosis and how would you assess this patient?
As
you are assessing the patient, he coughs and the wound opens up further with a
loop of bowel now on view.
What is the diagnosis and how would you proceed?
